This is an ongoing translation of the FAQ that used to be on the defunct Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II fansite "The air outside is gray, and...", as hosted by three of the game's more memorable characters.
Introduction
+ Clinic +
~ Come here when you're forgetful ~
I'm everyone's angel in white. Count on me!
I wear a white labcoat, too.
As do I.
We're the white coat trio.
I-I've been led into a bit... Hey, what are you two here for, exactly!?
Recently, this site has been in a bit of a rut and there've been no updates. We've gotten a pretty cold reception too without much feedback at all.
Well, some of the sites linked here have a peculiar understanding of things, showing admiration for answers that are overly blunt or dismissive. It seems like we've all gained a reputation as "scary people."
In short, we've been pushing people away. It's perfect for a game like Megami Tensei II, that pushes players away!
What are you doing, admiring this situation!?
In other words, our goal is to project a more mild image, right?
That's right.
We'll use this page as a FAQ for the time being, too.
It certainly is a bold move for someone who's lost their motivation to update their Megami Tensei site, isn't it? Well, we're going to try a lot of bold things here.
If you have time to mess around like this, finish your play report—
(gunfire)
Kyaah!
If you have any problems or questions, please write to the webmaster. Rest assured that there will be no bumpiness unless you've gone overboard yourself.
If you have answers to any questions that we're unable to answer ourselves due to lack of knowledge, as well as any mistakes or contrasting opinions, please do send us an email!
I think they'll come right at us.
Well then, take care!
Ah, we got rid of the email form. The bulletin board is back, so use that. You can still use email us directly if you want, too.
Character Profiles
Angel in White
The nurse who runs the shelter's clinic. She can treat your injuries for free, as long as you're a human.
Doctor Bakuta
A doctor holed up in an underground passage. He can make medicine, if you have the ingredients.
Cybernetics Lab Researcher
A man who can see a person with a missing arm and still think about money.
Questions 1 through 15
Translator's note: The captioned text appears to represent bulletin board texts. The name in brackets at the end is the poster, and is written in red.
What is this? This isn't some self-staged question, is it?
Well, everyone has to start somewhere.
It's better if we don't fabricate our own questions.
Still, they didn't actually give us even two choices. It really makes you feel the times.
Serious questions, stupid questions, and all kinds of things in-between — whatever it is, don't worry about it. [Angel in White]
That's what we wrote, but we still don't get that many stupid questions.
It's because we're not virtuous enough.
Q02: Persona 2 has been released, hasn't it?
From: catspotting
Of course, I haven't bought it. [Angel in White]
I haven't bought it yet either, of course. (laughs) Or more accurately... I don't want to buy it! (explosion) [Raygun]
By the way, I haven't bought FF9 either... or rather, I forgot it came out. [Angel in White]
FF9 came out way too early. Well, I don't want to buy that either! (another explosion) [Raygun]
I saw that my friend bought Persona 2, but it's really lame how the voice acting is only in the battles. [Gachopin]
It's more accurate to say that... voice acting in battles is lame... [Angel in White]
Okay, this is just self-staged stuff. We're in this.
And these posts are just awful. I'm surprised we didn't get more trolls.
Especially since I've gone and trolled my own message board before.
Well, you were pretty emotionally unstable back then.
But the thing is, it seems everyone agrees about Persona 2.
I'm trying my best here. Don't you appreciate that?
Don't be too hard on him, okay?
You've got to be kind to the elderly, after all.
Ugh, how humiliating...
Q03: Why did Mora go to Zaratan and nearly get swallowed?
From: catspotting
He was looking for some good food himself (laughs) [Kyosuke]
Maybe he wanted to be the good food himself. "I myself am a gourmet treat. How about it~" [Nyuu]
By eating delicious food, you become delicious food...? Eek~! [Angel in White]
Seriously, are we only capable of self-promotion here?
But isn't that a perfectly reasonable question?
Well, maybe Mora knew there was a pillar inside Zaratan, don't you think?
Everyone does.
Everyone does indeed.
Wh-what?
Can't you answer normally?
Q04: Where did the Dark Hero get his extreme makeover?
From: Kyosuke
He'd followed Pazuzu that far already, so surely he listened when Pazuzu told him to do it! [Angel in White]
Ahhhh I love his extreme makeover so much. I wanna see it from behind... hubba hubba. [RZ250R]
He's pretty toned considering he lived in a shelter, ain't he? [Jaba]
Maybe all that travel built up his body...? [Jaba]
Finally, posts from other people!
The webmaster was very happy with this. These are the kinds of questions we were hoping for, after all.
How can he be a Hero when he's so Dark?
If you're going to be Dark, call yourself a Heel or something!
Well, that would sound a lot less cool.
Naturally.
Why do you guys always do this to me?
Q05: So about the "Megiddo Fire"... Did you use it?
From: Kasu
I used it against the One True God for one turn. Then I sealed it away. [Angel in White]
By the way, there's an illustration of it in the Shin Megami Tensei fanbook on page 70. It sure looks amazing. [Gaboatto]
I heard the flames of Megido can be compared to a nuclear bomb, but there's no way~ [Angel in White]
It's really useful in Soul Hackers. (You can even buy it! Although it's expensive.) [Norn]
Oh, so is it the strongest weapon in Soul Hackers?
By the way, I loaned you Soul Hackers a while ago, didn't I?
Doctor, how far in are you?
Eh? Oh, ah... err...
...up to the part where I took off the winter clothes.
Eh? Well, that's not RIGHT at the beginning, but...
What's holding you up?
I was already put off even before I met many of the characters because I could tell they were just recycled ideas.
I understand.
Q05: Nice to meet you. Sorry to jump right in, but where is Hinokagutsuchi? By the way, there's an area in Lucifer's Castle 2F I can't enter. What do I do?
From: Elm Tree
Wow, our first real question! You can find the Hinokagutsuchi where the Nihil Blade was after you've reached Lucifer's Castle. [Angel in White]
Also, that area in Lucifer's Castle 2F, in the southwest, is inaccessible. You'll just have to accept that (laughs) [Angel in White]
By the way, that "illusory room" is accessible in Kyuuyaku, but there's nothing there anyway. [Angel in White]
I think I already checked the Nihil Blade spot, but I'll double check!! [Elm Tree]
So there really isn't anything in Lucifer's Castle 2F... At first, because of Mappara I thought maybe Hinokagutsuchi is there. I don't have Kyuuyaku, but when i checked the strategy guide it said you could enter, so I was just confused. [Elm Tree]
I found it~! I'm so happy. I remembered seeing Naga there. But the witch can't equip it, huh? That's a shame. Thanks so much! [Elm Tree]
You can at least see that area's shape if you use Mappara.
Well, I don't know if there's anything in it, though.
You find the Nihil Blade and Naga in the same spot, right?
Could be. I gotta say, I forgot.
Don't say anything about me being a senile old man.
I think you might be a little too self-aware.
Y-you rascal, you think you can make fun of anyone you want!?
I'll put a laser right in your path!
Kyaaah! Groper! Robber! Murderer!
I don't think any of those are true.
Q07: I got hit with the "PIG" curse in Lucifer's Castle. Where do I go to cure it? T_T
From: Nene
It's actually called "BOO's Curse" to be exact. No item or magic can heal it. You'll have to visit the Cathedral of Shadows. [Angel in White]
Th-that's... Well, thank you for answering me. [Nene]
I remember that I was able to cure it by using a Soma. But you can't use it during combat (crying). [Elm Tree]
A Soma can't cure PIG~ [Angel in White]
I'm sorry, maybe I was thinking of cursed equipment. In other words the CURSE status. Sorry to you too, Nene. [Elm Tree]
So a Soma really won't work, will it?
Yeah, that's right.
Dunno what the source of the curse really is, though.
It reminds me of MADARA!
H, her tastes are surprisingly depraved.
She can hear you!
Did you say something?
We didn't.
Q08: What is Stephen?
From: Yuu
He's a film director who handled "E.T." and "Jurassic Park". [Angel in White]
Or maybe he's the man who starred in "Hard to Kill". [Angel in White]
My apologies. I was actually asking about the only Stephen I know, who is the wheelchair-bound man appearing in Shin Megami Tensei II. [Yuu]
No, I understand (laughs) [Angel in White]
Ultimately, he's a very mysterious person. His true identity is never revealed in the game. [Angel in White]
Maybe he's the physicist Stephen Hawking? [Masa]
↑ He definitely looks modelled after him. He's also the first person you'd think of when you think "wheelchair-bound genius". [Angel in White]
Ah, is that so? This is my first time learning about him. [Yuu]
He could also be the Count of St. Germain... maybe? [Shuu]
But we already figured out that he's Professor Hawking... [Angel in White]
Well, when you think Steven, you think Segal, right?
Mm, sounds about right.
The main Stevens or Stephens I know are Spielberg and Segal.
However, asking questions of this nature on a site like this...
It feels like proof you're not very studious.
Perhaps not, but I doubt you were overly interested in researching this yourself, either.
I, I have a doctorate.
Q09: In Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei 2, when I teleported after befriending the witch, it said "Fly DNA detected..." What does this mean?
From: Yuu
Could you be more specific? From and to where did you teleport? [Angel in White]
To be honest, I don't know much about Kyuuyaku. Someone, follow up for me. [Angel in White]
It's essentially a rare phenomenon. There's a 1/256 chance that message will display. [Yukiya Hojo]
Ah, do you mean teleportation as in using the terminal? [Angel in White]
Then I think I might know a thing or two. There are other messages as well, I think. [Angel in White]
Could that message be inspired by "The Fly"...? [Nyuu]
↑ That's all I can think of... [Angel in White]
I also typically play Kyuuyaku 2... I think I saw a message like that too. Sorry, but I don't really remember the details. [Nemuri-koneko / Sleeping Kitten]
In my case, it happened while I was going back and forth from the Shinjuku Terminal. (Grinding EXP) [Norn]
Kyuuyaku is basically the next Shin game, isn't it...
It's painful, that game.
You're exaggerating.
Why do you think we remodelled this corner, exactly?
So I could talk as much as I want.
Isn't there supposed to be an "angel" here?
Translator's note: Nemuri-koneko's name is a reference to Nemuri-neko, a particularly famous wooden carving of a peacefully sleeping cat.
Q10: In the Diamond Realm in Shin Megami Tensei II, Izanami is there, but where did Izanagi, her husband, go?
From: Yuu
I'm pretty sure he just isn't in Shin 2. [S. Morimoto]
Well this has already been answered, so let's move on.
I doubt that'll work for the next question, however.
Q11: Who should be in your party when fighting Satan or YHVH? (I use Lucifer, Kali, Hanuman for Tarukaja, and Ubelluris for Rakunda, but Ubelluris dies easily because of Ziodyne doing ~150 damage.)
From: TEN
I just use the three event Deities (Lucifer, Baal and Ahura Mazda), plus Saleos. When it's time to fight YHVH, just replace Saleos. [Angel in White]
When I'm up against Satan, I use Lucifer, Kali, Hanuman and Saleos. When I fight YHVH, I let Saleos die and bring out Kikurihime for Rakunda. [Nabekki]
Everyone seems very focused on defence. I like to focus on attack (to end it quickly) [TEN]
Lucifer, Thor, Vishnu and Hanuman. But Lucifer only attacks once, so it's safe to replace him with Baal or Michael sometimes. [Tetsu]
Today, I casually went to try fighting Satan, and it said "A great hit! That's gotta sting!" and I dealt 1134 damage!! Fear the Kagutsuchi. [TEN]
My dear questioner, that's a nice post.
Who exactly could give such a boring answer as "the three event Deities," I wonder!
However, I didn't realize there were other people who used Saleos...
Bufulaon Stones won't let you stunlock Satan, so Saleos dies pretty fast.
Well, that's fine, isn't it? Even if you die, as long as your party wins you'll get to the ending.
Th-that's horrible...
Did you say something?
Translator's note: A large part of this discussion is accessible to buffs (Tarukaja, Rakukaja) and debuffs (Tarunda, Rakunda). Saleos has Rakukaja and Tarunda, but he's incredibly weak (level 28 with 200 HP).
Q12: Who is Kins Head?
From: Nabekki
Kazuma Kaneko's likeness. I think that's what the man himself said. Maybe during the 10th Anniversary of Megami Tensei? [TEN]
That could be it! Kaneko-san's head... [Nabekki]
The 10th Anniversary history book, right? I believe mine got all torn up.
What about yours, Doctor?
No surprise that mine's wrecked too.
The interior's no good, the binding's no good. What a gobsmackingly awful book they made for us.
Incidentally, though, did you read anything about Kins Head in the book?
It fell apart just as I was reading it and got thrown in the trash, so I can't say I did.
Translator's note: Kins Head is an enemy in Megami Tensei II.
Q13: I should have asked a while ago, but how do you get Masakado's Helmet? By the way, FC2 is the best!
From: Yod
I really apologize for not finding it myself, but I really want it, so please lend me a hand. [Yod]
I vaguely remember this, but I think Masakado-san gave it to me when I went to visit the Royal Castle. I know this is vague, but... [Nabekki]
So without Lucifer, there's no way... That's the impression I get? [TEN]
↑ Sorry, I meant to say "in the party" ^^ [TEN]
Oh! Thank you very much! Do you not need any special stats for it? Ah, I'm at my parents' place, so I can't check yet! [Yod]
I believe your stats should not matter. [Angel in White]
I got it, and pretty easily too. Honestly, it was way too simple. Thanks for the help. [Yod]
The last sentence really is an important part of this question, isn't it?
It's a prime example of how feared "they" are.
The guy was so on edge, he felt like he had to suck up to the community or he'd get trolled!
What kind of site is this?
Oi!
Ah, that's a pretty bland comeback, don't you think?
...
Q14: My "question" is in fact a report!
From: Yod
I decided to use the default names, but [Yod]
The main character is "Watashi?????" [Yod]
The heroine is "Shoujo!!" [Yod]
The best friend is... Oh? "Tomodachi...", is it? [Yod]
And of course, I'm playing the Famicom version! ... But even though I didn't add the question marks myself, they showed up in the names. [Yod]
Is this about Masakado's Helmet too~? [TEN]
Fight well, Yod-san. [TEN]
Yep, I gave this a go and got the same result.
I figured it'd prompt me for a real name or somethin', but it just moved on like butter.
If you have a default name available to you in RPG, then of course you use it, and if you don't, you'll worry about what to call your characters for at least an hour.
It seems you somehow didn't notice all of them. How unexpected!
Hmm, well it's more like I figured "Hideto" and "Rosanna" were the real defaults.
Q15: I can't find the Four Heavenly Kings in Shin 1! Where are you guys?
From: mr,t
There are four 2D dungeons that are red buildings, you'll find them there. [Rei]
By the way, you'll need the "Four Door Gem" or the doors will not open. [Red]
You're a lifesaver, Rei-san. Also, even though I struggled so much to find them, I beat them down in one turn. [mr,t]
Those buildings are the best points to earn experience at the start, lol [Rei]
Give that a try on your next playthrough, if you please~ ♪ [Rei]
So I've already noticed. After the Destruction, go inside and make sure to run as soon as you see any Tengu, lol [mr,t]
Ah, so you know all along!? Lol. Tengu is just Shibaboo Hell... (>_<) [Rei]
The Tengu, I actually hunted down with Mudo using Kodokuzaras and the fused Chaos Hero. [Angel in White]
By the way, if you defeat all of the Four Heavenly Kings, you can follow the Neutral route. [Athena]
It may have other conditions, but give it a try. [Athena]
To follow the Neutral route, it's not actually necessary to defeat the Four Heavenly Kings, I think? [Angel in White]
Rei-san is a good person!
Sure is, and they got it right, but this is another Shin question.
Yes, yes. I understand your meaning, so let's move on to the next question.
What's with the cold shoulder?
Questions 16 through 30
Q16: Nice to meet you. I'll get right to it, is it possible that save guy in Megami Tensei II who's frozen in ice (probably a Sword Knight)? I've been thinking about this forever... If anyone knows, please teach me~
From: mame
Sorry, just saw that it's in the walkthrough. My bad. Delete this if possible, please. Ahh~ I feel a lot better knowing this though, thank you very much. [mame]
What a great name, mame!
Though it's probably not referring to that MAME, I'd think.
The heck is this, some kind of dirty joke?
I'd prefer if you could be quiet for a moment, please.
Q17: First post here. How do I get to Ueno in Shin Megami Tensei II? Thanks in advance. m(_ _)m
From: Momo
http://www.alles.or.jp/~seafood/armory/tokyo/ginza.html [Angel in White]
http://www.alles.or.jp/~seafood/map/index.html --> Ginza and other entrances B1F. [Angel in White]
Sorry. m(_ _)m Guess it was there all along. I found it and just kept charging ahead. I was so immersed in SMT2 that my reply got delayed. [Momo]
Wh... what kind of response is that!?
No wonder this place is dying!
But asking about something that's already covered...
As I've said, anyone who reads this site from cover to cover is out of their mind.
And just as importantly, why on Earth are the guides and the data scattered about across so many pages?
If you want to wonder why people ask questions like these, please reflect on the state of things first.
Yes, exactly, and the title of the page is confusing too!
Who would know that "Checkman" equals the map!?
Grgh...
Q18: In Megami Tensei II, once I get a stat to 35 it doesn't go up anymore, apparently?? Also, what are the benefits of wearing cloaks?
From: HIRO
Stats max out at 35. As for cloaks, they're armour, so they have the same effect as wearing armour. (Repetition) [Angel in White]
Thank you very much. This is my first time maxing out a stat, so I'm certainly inexperienced... I'm level 57 and Salamander is my only ally, lol. [HIRO]
Eh, Hiro as in the guy who was in SPEED?
I wonder if I can get an autograph.
Wouldn't it be difficult to get to him?
Translator's note: SPEED was a group of Japanese musicians. The nurse is thinking of Hiromasa Ijichi, most likely.
Q19: In Famicom MT2, the Attack stat of demon allies doesn't seem to match the damage they actually do. Why?
From: Somebody...
Because level and the enemy's Defence are also a factor. [Angel in White]
Because different allies attack with different elements. By the way, Lucifer deals Gun damage, while Kali is treated as attacking with a sword, so Rangda will reflect both of their attacks. [Minmin]
Eh, Minmin as in the voice of Road Runner, perhaps?
You're really overdoin' it, sit back for a sec.
Th-this is sexual harassment!
Wh, why do I bother...
Q20: Sorry for the trouble. Where's the best place to level up in MT2? (I'm level 60 currently.)
From: HIRO
Fighting Bai Long in Ginza, maybe? [aa]
As long as you can still get into Hidden Ginza [Ura Ginza], aa-san is correct, yit's Paimon and Kimaris. Although their level is high, they're total mooks. [Angel in White]
Bai Long is ridiculously weak, really.
Although its Vitality is high, it has no real Defence, so it takes a lot of damage.
It doesn't have any magic or special abilities worth noting, either.
Unless you're a dragon maniac, you'll likely never bother recruiting one.
Even I could beat 'em.
My, my. you've started with the jokes again.
Gramps, are you okay~?
Can't you try sugarcoating it a teensy bit more?
Q21: In Kyuuyaku 2, who is stronger, Luci-sama or Zeu-sama?
From: RUN Racehorse
Their HP, MP, attributes, resistances, spells, and other status is all but identical~ [Angel in White]
But, I've heard that their attack type is different, so Lucifer can attack enemies that reflect swords (like Girimekhala) while Zeus will have his attacks reflected. [Angel in White]
In conclusion, Lucifer is very slightly stronger. [Angel in White]
In addition, to get Zeus, you must combine the three other event Deities, but with Lucifer, you get to keep the three event Deities on his side. [Angel in White]
Can you recruit the event Deities on Lucifer's route? [s Morimoto]
What is Lu-V-fer? (;´Д`) In any case, the event Deities on Lucifer's route are Lucifer, Baal and Ahura Mazda. [Angel in White]
In other words, in the Zeus route, if you want to make him you lose the other event Deities, while if you're on Lucifer's route you can keep Baal and Ahura Mazda, who are almost as good, while also using Lucifer. [Angel in White]
So basically, you're saying I shouldn't step on the frog no matter what?
Yes, indeed. The story that results is good, as well.
Yes, yes! That severed head of a "One True God" is so deeply uncool!
In looks and everything else, there's no way he can compare to His Excellency! Lucifer-saaamaaaa!!
Y-you're such a fangirl...
To be continued…
